In Spring 2018, Kinetec UK launch the innovative, new CPM - Kinetec Kompanion™. Based around the chassis of the market-leading Kinetec Spectra™ knee CPM, Kinetec have changed the face of CPM therapy controls and management. By utilising a 'tablet' interface and new software, the CPM is controlled more easily and intuitively by the patient and clinician. In addition, the new control software has enabled the user to have more options for movement including a 'spring' mode, an extremity focus mode, an evaluation mode and a dynamic stretch mode.

The Dr.Aktive® Cold Compression Therapy supports are recommended for post-op use to control pain and swelling. Our cold therapy support is the ideal way to 'ice' the joint whether it be post exercise, injury or as part of a rehabilitation programme. Cold compression therapy will help minimise pain, reduce swelling and maximise your rehabilitation potential. The simple supports for the knee, shoulder and ankle are cost-effective and easy to use. Simply cool the removable gel pack in the fridge or freezer for a couple of hours and then insert into the support. The soft, conforming support will hold the gel pack in place around the joint using wide Velcro straps. The compression is then provided by using a simple hand-sized pump that pushes air into pockets within the support. These in turn provide the compression. Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) Therapy Experimental investigations in the 1970s provided the scientific basis for CPM treatment using motor-driven exercise equipment. Positive clinical experience, with this exciting therapeutic modality being well received by surgeons, therapists and patients, accelerated its widespread acceptance. Forty years later, advances in technology and the extension of this form of post-surgical rehabilitation therapy to new indications and protocols demonstrate that CPM still plays an integral and significant role in orthopaedic recovery. For the patient, it is a valuable and well-tolerated method of rapidly restoring lost joint function, mobility and confidence. It is important to review the key clinical outcomes from Professor Robert Salter’s pioneering animal work. He used rabbits with the following pathologies: Full thickness cartilage defects Acute septic arthritis Intra-articular fractures Partial thickness tendon lacerations  Rabbits with full thickness cartilage defects were divided into three treatment groups with therapy instituted immediately postoperatively as follows: Immobilisation with a cast Intermittent active motion (cage activity) Continuous passive motion Conclusions: The immobilised group showed healing characterised by the formation of fibrous tissue and many joint adhesions. The cage activity group showed imperfect healing characterised by a combination of fibrous tissue and poorly differentiated cartilage. The CPM group showed healing through formation of new hyaline-like cartilage occurring in one half of the defects within four weeks. CPM did not harm intact, normal living articular cartilage in rabbits. The latest research into CPM therapy by Dr Volker Sauer, Germany (Oct 2016) clearly demonstrates the benefits for patients to use CPM therapy alongside their daily active exercise regimes during their post-operative rehabilitation. Based on 76 patients, the results include significantly increased ROM at 6,12 and 52 weeks and achieving the same Knee Society Score and Oxford Knee Scores results at 6 weeks compared to results of treatment without CPM therapy at 52 weeks.
